Ever since William and Kate’s wedding late last April, stories of the royal couple’s activities have been regularly featured in the American press… William and Kate in North America; William playing polo; William and Kate yachting; Kate’s wedding dress on display; William’s cousin (please note, not Prince Andrew’s daughter) graduating from Goldsmith College; and on and on. It all proves once again that Americans really are closet monarchists. We secretly long to have a king rather than a president. Why else would so many millions of Americans have tuned in at the ungodly hour of 2:00 a.m. to watch Charles and Diana exchange vows thirty years ago? Why else do we invariably vote for the tall guy in presidential elections? (It does make one wonder about the chances for any woman who may aspire to the country’s highest elective office). It also makes me wonder about a rather odd letter I read recently.
